N2  - The paper presents the results of laboratory tests of five fly ashes. The following standard properties of the ashes were determined: grain-size distribution, density, outer specific surface and chemical composition (X). In addition the properties required for protective layers were determined: water absorbability, ability to retain pollutants and solubility (Y). The calculations of correlation between each value from the (Y) group and each value from the (X) group were performed. The analysis of obtained relationships has indicated the properties influencing significantly the expected behaviour of the ash to be used for the protective layers building
